This Shorthead redhorse original artwork is archivally matted and framed, with regular plexiglass and a wood frame with a reddish stain, to complement the fish’s richly hued red fins.

I choose to believe that the sleek, handsome form of this fish is what prompted someone to name it after a horse, and I prefer to ignore the first part of the name which seems unnecessarily insulting to this nicely proportioned animal. It’s one of the fish species that prompted¬†this blog post about fishes named after other animals.
