original drawing of a Shorthead redhorse (Moxostoma macrolepidotum)

matted, framed (see photo)
colored pencils on Stonehenge paper
Image size: 9 x 3.75 inches
Frame size: 16.75 x 12 inches

This Shorthead redhorse original artwork is archivally matted and framed, with regular plexiglass and a wood frame with a reddish stain, to complement the fish’s richly hued red fins.

I choose to believe that the sleek, handsome form of this fish is what prompted someone to name it after a horse, and I prefer to ignore the first part of the name which seems unnecessarily insulting to this nicely proportioned animal. It’s one of the fish species that prompted this blog post about fishes named after other animals.
