Original drawing of a Greenside darter male (Etheostoma blennioides) in breeding coloration

Unmatted, unframed
colored pencils on Stonehenge paper
Image size: 8 x 2.5 inches
Paper size: 11 x 7 inches

Greenside darters are an attractive species, and the males really put on a colourful display during breeding season. The small fish, native to North America and found in the Great Lakes area, is one that I illustrated for Gerald R. Smith’s revision of the field guide Fishes of the Great Lakes Region. The specimen I used as the basis for this drawing was just a smidge over 2.5 inches long.
