I think this must be the most elegant fish I’ve ever met. I was fortunate to have it in a tank in front of me while I illustrated it, and I was struck by the graceful movement of its long, undulating body. It was such a beautiful animal. Burbot are the only members of their family that live in freshwater, and their wide distribution in colder lakes and streams of North America includes the Great Lakes. I illustrated this juvenile burbot for Gerald R. Smith’s revision of the field guide Fishes of the Great Lakes Region.
