I’ve illustrated hundreds of fishes over the years, and I think my favorite group to draw or paint might have be the shiners. It’s a fun challenge to make these minnows look silvery, and when a fish’s scales are large relative to their body size—as in this Blackchin shiner—the finicky task of laying out their scale rows becomes easier and much more rewarding.
