These distinctive shorebirds occur throughout much of the world and have remarkably long migrations. Some birds travel more than 6,500 miles between breeding and nonbreeding grounds. I painted this Ruddy turnstone in its nonbreeding plumage for an interpretive sign at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C.
